Monday July the 6th 2009: Beacon Journal

Management was contacted today by Beth Lin-Fisher from the Beacon Journal: she had been notified about the store's closing, and is going to write an article on the situation. She will be meeting with the Manager and/or Assistant Manager tomorrow to discuss the details as to what's going to happen with the store, how customers are reacting to the news, and how the closing will affect the staff. We'll keep you posted on when it goes to print. THANK-YOU BEACON JOURNAL!!!

Saturday July the 4th 2009: petition update

Friday July the 3rd 2009: The Jericho Idea

There's a plan brewing that would parallel the petition to-be-sent to the landlord, an idea borrowed from the short-lived television show Jericho. In the television series, a Grandfather told a story about an American troupe that was pinned-down by the Germans in WW2, and how instead of sending-word of their surrender, the Americans simply replied "Nuts," and proceeded to fight. When the executives at CBS cancelled the show, the viewers were outraged, and began sending all types of nuts to the CBS main office ... they mailed close-to 10,000 pounds of nuts to get their message heard.

We already have 144 signatures. The goal is to amass as many movie cases as we can, and then send them to the landlord. On the cover of every case, will be a family or a name of someone that has signed the petition. This will probably not have the same outcome as Jericho, but it will make-for an accurate 3-D visual of the amount of people displeased by the mention of this store's closing.

The petition will be sent regardless; however, if you wish to contribute ANY empty dvd cases, PLEASE take them to the store. Thank-You

Thursday July the 2nd 2009: petition

A petition has been started; it is located inside the store, next to the gumball machine, near the exit doors. Its primary purpose is to emphasize to Corporate the strong desire for a store in the Akron area. The District Manager feels that if enough signatures can be gathered, coupling the petition with the store's strong standings among the other's in the district will get the executives to sternly take-notice, and further-pursue another address for the store. Secondly, a copy of the petition will be forwarded to the landlord's office, as testament to how many people are displeased with the decision to not renew their current lease.

The store has roughly 2,800 customers, so we have set a goal of 1,500 signatures. PLEASE, take 30 seconds to sign your name and information as you exit the store ... even if you only come to return movies, there's a dropbox inside: just walk-through and give a signature. ALSO, anyone that signs the Guestbook or sends an e-mail will have their name automatically added-to the petition.

With your help, with everyone's help, we can emphasize to Corporate how much Akron Loves Renting Movies.

Tuesday June the 30th 2009: Bad News

Upper-management was told today that the landlord would not be offering an extension on the lease, that our location would be closing in 90 days, and Auto-Zone would be moving into the building. Although one of the top stores in the district, after 15 years of entertaining Akron, our local movie store will be gone in less than two months: July 13th will be the last day for rentals, the store then becomes strictly retail, and on August 22nd the doors will be locked. Corporate hurried to find another building, but, with the economy being what it is, the moneys involved in the search were all-too-quickly used up, and they scout no further.

Many of us find this news to be quite heartbreaking.

This site has been created for everyone who will be affected by this change. There just needed to be a place where customers could share memories, and let their thoughts be heard. Anything typed will be printed-out and sent to the landlord, so as they can read-of the repurcussions of this foul decision.

Customers will have the option of renting from either the Montrose, Graham Road, or any of the other stores in the area ... but it was the convenience of the Market Street location, the helpful staff, the vast selection they offered, and any other slew of reasons that will make OUR store greatly missed. This closing affects the entertainment of so many Akronites' days and weekends; please, voice your thoughts via e-mail or sign the Guestbook, let's not allow this to happen without the landlord knowing what a horrible thing they've done.

Thank-You
